As we are entering the age of knowledge economy from the age of information society, data become the most important raw materials, and competitive advantages require effective and rapid transformation from data to knowledge. With the proliferation of digital data due to the increasing use of digital systems, advanced data processing and visualisation technologies are essential to convert it to useful knowledge. Drawn from a number of recent and inter-disciplinary collaborative research projects in various sectors, which include aerospace, entertainment, environment, and medical, Professor Shark will present his current research work and a number of technologies developed for integrated digital processing and immersive/interactive visualisation of multi-dimensional and multi-modality data sets, thereby sketching out the technological future that is knowledge based.

Professor Lik-Kwan Shark is the founder and head of the ADSIP (Applied Digital Signal and Image Processing) Research Centre at the University of Central Lancashire in England. He is a fellow of IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology), and a frequent research proposal assessor for various grant bodies in the UK and Europe. He collaborates with over 100 organisations worldwide, particularly noteworthy are world leading aerospace companies in Europe and prestigious hospitals in the Northwest of England. He has led/participated in six multi-million pound research projects funded by the UK research council and the European Commission, with the total value of the external funded projects accumulated to more than 51 million pounds. He has supervised 25 MPhil/PhD students and 10 research assistants/fellows. His research has produced two books and more than 100 papers, as well as two medals for technology innovation from BAE Systems.
